Birger was a fierce competitor on the course, but away from the contest he was a quiet, friendly and deeply likeable presence within Magersfontein. He played the game hard, without ever needing to make much noise about it, and was someone whose company was valued well beyond the scorecard.
Birger passed away in June 2024. He is greatly missed, and his place in the history of the Magersfontein Cup is about far more than wins, losses or handicaps.
